Confused About All The Gold Options?

Here’s an explanation:

Solid Gold

Composition: 100% gold alloy (e.g., 14K, 18K). It’s alloyed (mixed) with copper and silver. The more additional metals added lowers the Karat.

Durability: Highly durable, doesn’t tarnish or wear off.

Cost: Most expensive.

Use: Luxury/heirloom jewelry.

Gold-Filled

Composition: Thick gold layer (5% of total weight) bonded to brass/copper.

Durability: Long-lasting (years with care), tarnish-resistant.

Cost: Mid-range.

Use: Affordable everyday jewelry.

Gold Vermeil

Composition: Sterling silver base + thick gold plating (≥2.5 microns, 10K+).

Durability: Moderate (lasts with gentle use), may tarnish over time.

Cost: Higher than plated, lower than solid gold.

Use: Hypoallergenic, mid-tier jewelry.

Gold-Plated – I do not use

Composition: Thin gold layer (≤0.5 microns) over cheap base metal (e.g., brass).

Durability: Least durable (fades quickly with wear).

Cost: Cheapest.

Use: Trendy/fashion jewelry.

Key Differences

Choose gold-filled for durability on a budget, vermeil for hypoallergenic quality, plated for short-term trends, and solid gold for investment pieces.

How to Care for Your Handmade Jewelry

All of my jewelry is heirloom quality made to last. Wearing your jewelry often is the best way to keep it from tarnishing. But if it does tarnish simply use a jewelry polishing cloth that you can buy on Amazon to wipe it and bring back it’s shine.

Handmade bezeled Seaglass jewelry should never be submerged in water or worn in the shower. I clearcoat all of the inside of the back plates of my rings to prevent tarnish due to any water that may get inside but you should still remove your jewelry before washing your hands doing dishes, bathing, etc. If you want your sea glass to look shiny and have a brighter color, you can use a drop of baby oil and rub it into the glass wiping off any excess.
